Those Who Don’t Believe In Magic Will Never Find It

Roald Dahl was, without a shadow of a doubt, my favourite author as a child. Come to think of it, he would quite easily make it into my list of favourite authors today. I have fond memories of being terrified by The Witches, listening to the George’s Marvellous Medicine audiobook on long car journeys, and reading The BFG under the covers at night.

Unlike many children’s authors, he never patronised his young readers or protected them from the gloomy and the grotesque. Much like the Grimms’ original fairytales, Dahl’s slightly dark tales prepared readers for the world they were growing up in; one that is not made entirely from sunshine and rainbows. With complete ease, he could ignite a child’s imagination whilst subtly fine-tuning their moral compass.

“A person who has good thoughts cannot ever be ugly. You can have a wonky nose and a crooked mouth and a double chin and stick-out teeth, but if you have good thoughts they will shine out of your face like sunbeams and you will always look lovely.” Roald Dahl, The Twits
